To get started on your own flower bandana, you will need DK or fingering weight yarn in 3 colors, you can easily switch up the look just by changing your colors.

You’ll also need a US H/8 (5.00 mm) crochet hook, and some stitch markers.

I have also included both knit or crochet options for the cord so you can finish your headband exactly how you like.

MATERIALS:

Any fingering to dk wt yarn will work well with this pattern. You will need 3 different colors: MC plus CC for the leaves and CC for the tulips.

*For first sample (yellow), I used The Autumn Acorn heavy fingering wt, single-ply, 100% merino, thick + thin wool yarn, naturally dyed with daisies (MC: yellow), lilies (CC1: leaf: green) + Brazilwood (CC2: tulip: pink); approx 50 g/150 yds (137 m) per skein.
MC: *I used 26 g/ 78 yds (71 m) yellow, CC1: *I used 6 g/ 18 yds (16.5 m) green, CC2: *I used 8 g/ 24 yds (22 m) pink.
*Total yarn used: 40 g/120 yds (110 m)

*For second sample (fuchsia), I used The Autumn Acorn fingering wt sock yarn, naturally dyed with cochineal (MC: fuchsia), (CC1: green) + (CC2: pink);
*Total yarn used: 40 g/120 yds (110 m)

**Remember, to achieve a seamless color change throughout, attach new color on last step of st of previous row, complete st with new color, ch 1 or 2 and proceed as usual.

NOTIONS:

CROCHET HOOK + KNITTING NEEDLES (optional):

US H/8 (5.00 mm) crochet hook
Note: additional sizes can be achieved by going up or down a hook size and/or adjusting your yarn weight.
US 7 (4.5 mm) double pointed knitting needles for optional knit I-cord.

GAUGE:

Sample One: 17 hdc sts + 12 hdc rows = 4” (10 cm) using size US H/8 (5.00 mm) crochet hook and fingering wt sock yarn (blocked).
Leaf plus flower rows = 1” (2.5 cm) tall (blocked).

MEASUREMENTS:

Bandana: length: 10” (25.5 cm) x width: 17” (43 cm); Ties: length: 12” (30.5 cm) x width: .25” (.6 cm)

Let’s Begin The Free Bandana Crochet Pattern

BANDANA:

*ch 1 is not considered a st

SET-UP ROW:

For both sizes, beg at bottom point of bandana triangle:
(RS) With MC yarn, ch 3 (3), 1 hdc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 hdc in last ch, ch1, turn. (2 hdc) *Place your st marker on this side to mark the RS.

INCREASE ROWS/MC SECTION ONE:

(WS) Inc Row: 2 hdc in ea st, ch 1, turn. (4 hdc)

(RS) Inc Row 1: 2 hdc in first st, hdc to last st, 2 hdc in last st, ch 1, turn. (6 hdc)
(WS) Inc Row 2: 2 hdc in first st, hdc to last st, 2 hdc in last st, ch 1, turn. (8 hdc)

Rep the last 2 Inc Rows a total of 15 times more, ending with a RS row, ch 2, turn. (38 hdc)

FIRST LEAF ROW:

(WS) With CC1, 2 dc in first st, skip 2 sts, *(1 dc in next st, ch 2, 1 dc in same st), skip 2 sts, rep from * to last 4 sts, skip 3 sts, 2 dc in last st, ch 2, turn. Cut CC1.

FIRST TULIP ROW:

MC SECTION TWO:

Cont with MC, working Inc Rows 1 + 2 a total of 10 times, ending with a RS row, ch 2, turn. (58 hdc)

SECOND LEAF ROW:

(WS) With CC1, 2 dc in first st, skip 2 sts, *(1 dc in next st, ch 2, 1 dc in same st); skip 2 sts, rep from * to last 3 sts, skip 2 sts, 2 dc in last st, ch 2, turn. Cut CC1.

SECOND TULIP ROW:

FINISHING + BLOCKING:

TIES + TRIM: (choose from option of crochet or knit ties)

Crochet:

Using US H/8 (5.00 mm) hook, cont with MC, ch 60, turn and work 1 sc in ea ch across. (60 sc)

Work 1 sc in ea st across the top/long edge of bandana. (60 sc) At the other end, ch 60, turn and work 1 sc in ea ch across for second tie. (60 sc)

With MC or any CC, attach yarn to top lt side and work 1 sc in ea st along both diagonal sides of the bandana, while weaving in all loose yarn tails at the same time. Work 2 sc in the st at the bottom point of the triangle. (102 sc)
Cut yarn and finish off.

Knit Ties:

Using US 7 (4.5 mm) dpns, remove crochet hook from last yarn loop on hook and replace with knitting needle. Pick up 3-4 sts along top lt edge of work and knit an I-cord until approx 12” (30.5 cm) in length.
BO sts. Cut yarn.
Repeat for rt side tie.

Crochet Trim:

With MC or any CC, attach yarn to top lt side and work 1 sc in ea st along lt diagonal side of bandana (62 sc). *Weave in all loose yarn tails at the same time. Work 2 sc in the st at the Bottom point of the triangle. (2 sc) Work 1 sc in ea st along rt diagonal side of bandana (62 sc). Total trim sts: (126 sc)
Cut MC or CC. Finish off.

Blocking:

Soak your bandana in warm water + mild soap, wrap in a towel to remove excess water, reshape, and lay it flat to dry.

Weave in all remaining loose ends and enjoy!
