The Norwegian Fir Knit Hat
The Norwegian Fir Knit Hat is a soft, lacy beanie inspired by quiet woodland walks and the delicate shapes of evergreen branches.
I designed this hat to feel both feminine and practical. It’s something you can wear just as easily while running errands in town as you can while wandering through a forest trail.
The subtle lace pattern adds texture without overwhelming the design, giving the finished hat a light, airy look while still keeping it warm and sturdy.
Knit from the bottom up, this hat has a gently structured fit with a touch of stretch, making it comfortable for everyday wear. I especially love how versatile it is, you can keep it fitted for a classic look or add a little extra length for a relaxed, slouchy style.
How To Knit The Norwegian Fir Hat
This free knitting pattern is designed for intermediate knitters who are comfortable working in the round and following a lacy stitch pattern.
The hat is knit using circular needles (and/or double-pointed needles for the crown), starting at the brim and working upward. The lace sections create the signature Norwegian Fir texture, while still being approachable if you’ve tried basic lace before.
For yarn, I used a beautiful DK-weight farm yarn made from Gotland wool and silk, which gives the hat a slightly rustic feel with a soft sheen. You’ll need US 2 (2.75 mm) and US 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles, along with a few stitch markers and a tapestry needle for finishing.
The pattern includes two adult sizes and is written to have negative ease, so it hugs the head comfortably. If you’d like a more relaxed, slouchy beanie, you can simply repeat the lace pattern for an extra round or two before shaping the crown. You can find more of my hat patterns right here.

Pattern Information:
Yarn:
Grand View Farm yarn – 1(2) skeins of 3 ply, 80% Gotland wool + 20% silk, DK wt, 150 yds/137 m in natural color, “Jagger”.
Needles:
US 2/2.75 mm 16” circular or dpns
US 5/3.75 mm 16” circular and/or dpns
Notions:
(6,7) stitch markers (1 unique to mark BOR)
Tapestry needle (for weaving in ends)
Gauge:
24 sts and 32 rnds = 4″ / 10 cm in Eyelet Lace Stitch Pattern on larger needles.
Note: I had a difficult time figuring out gauge because of the lace stitches so this may not be accurate!
Measurements/Sizes: (Unstretched)
Hat has approximately 4-5” of negative ease
Small – 16”/40 cm circumference at brim
Med/Lg – 17”/43 cm circumference at brim
Small – 18”/46 cm circumference at body
Med/Lg – 19”/48 cm circumference at body
Small – 8″ / 20 cm length from brim to crown
Med/Lg – 9”/23 cm length from brim to crown

Eyelet Lace Stitch Pattern:
Round 1: K2, *p7, k5; rep from * to last 10 sts, p7, k3.
Round 2: K around.
Round 3: *Yo, k2, p2, p3tog, p2, k2, yo, k1; rep from * around.
Round 4: K around.
Round 5: K1, *yo, k2, p1, p3tog, p1, k2, yo, k3; rep from * to last 11 sts, yo, k2, p1,
p3tog, p1, k2, yo, k2.
Round 6: K around.
Round 7: K2 *yo, k2, p3tog, k2, yo, k5; rep from * to last 10 sts, yo, k2, p3tog, k2,
yo, k3.
Round 8: K around.
Hat Ribbed Brim:
Using smaller needles, CO (108,120) sts. (To make your hat smaller or larger, your CO number must be divisible by 12.)
*K2, p2; rep from * for 8 rnds.
Hat Body:
Using larger needles, work rnds 1-8 of Eyelet Lace Stitch Pattern 5 (6) times.
On (5th,6th) rep, end with rnd 7.
Crown:
Dec Set-Up Round: K (18, 20), *pm, k (18, 20); rep from * around.
Dec Round 1: *K2tog, k to 2 sts before m, ssk; rep from *around. (96, 108) sts
Next Round: K around.
Dec Round 2: Rep last 2 rnds (7, 8) more times or until you have 12 sts remaining.
Remove all st markers, except for the BOR marker during the last dec rnd.
Next Round: K2tog around. (6 sts)
Break yarn, leaving a 6”/15 cm long tail. Using a tapestry needle, thread tail through
remaining 6 sts, pulling tightly to close hole.
Finishing:
To block, soak in warm water and mild soap, reshape and lay flat to dry.
Weave in all loose ends.
